Nature Homeschool Program at Royal Botanical Gardens: Hamilton, Ontario

RBG OFFERS NEW NATURE EDUCATION PROGRAM FOR HOME SCHOOLERS

For over 40 years, education experts at Royal Botanical Gardens have been
offering dynamic, hands-on outdoor education opportunities for classes from
schools in the Hamilton/Burlington area. Now these great programs are
available to home schooled children too.

This new program features seasonal exploration for children between 4 and 11
years of age. Classes will run from 1 to 3 p.m. on the second and fourth
Tuesday afternoon of each month, and the fee is $6.25/child/session, the
same fee as charged for regular school programs at the Gardens. Themes for
this fall vary each month from Summer’s End in September (with one day
devoted to seasonal changes in insects and one to plants), to Fall Glory
(featuring fall colour and migration), Getting Ready for Winter (seeds and
hibernation) and a special Gifts of Winter program to help wildlife in
winter. According to RBG’s Nature Centre Manager Ian Hendry, “Children will
be grouped into at least two age groups and if sufficient children enrol, we
will be able to further subdivide the children into tighter age groupings.”

A detailed description of this and other RBG programs are available online
at http://www.rbg.ca/pages/edu_fam_kids.html or in the RBG Public Program
Calendar, available at local libraries and recreation centres. Register
online at www.rbg.ca or call (905) 527 1158 ext. 270. Pre-registration is
absolutely essential, and must be received at least one week ahead of each
date. Dress for the weather as programs will run rain or shine, though
indoor activity may take the place of outdoor exploration in inclement
weather. Parents are encouraged to participate.

Updated December 2007

Current Most popular Board Games

1. The Settlers of Catan - New 4th Edition
2. Carcassonne Game ( My FAVOURITE all time game!) + Carcassonne: Traders and Builders Game Expansion
3. Lost Cities
4. Ticket to Ride and Ticket to Ride - Europe
5. Zooloretto
6. Bang!
7. Blokus Strategy Board Game ( Kids love this- even my husband likes to play. )
8. Mr. Jack (This is not as morbid as it sounds… Mr. Jack is Jack The Ripper. The object of the gameis for the player who is Jack to avoid being caught -other players must catch him. This game is a HUGE breakout hit. Involves quite a bit of strategy and critical thinking.
9. Bohnanza This is actually a card game- but it is so popular and so good- I had to put it in.
10. Curses The Side Splitting Party Game ( VERY family friendly and great for larger groups!)

Using Breastfeeding Bracelets?

I see the ad for these all the time- breastfeeding bracelets to keep track of how long you breastfeed, when you breastfed last and for how long. The biggest seller of these that I see is www.milkbands.com.
I never saw the need for these until I have a preemie baby and to really pay attention to how long and when my baby breastfed. Was also useful when I tried to increase my milk supply to know when - and which side-I last pumped on fed baby .
Not sure how they work- but I have a couple of other ideas to try. To remember which side- use a diaper pin or small pi on your bra strap ad transfer to the side you last breastfed on. Can also use a hair elastic on your wrist- make sure its not TOO loose. An expandable bracelet or bangle would serve the same purpose.

Other breastfeeding bracelets:

Nursing bracelets These are ice- you can get in baby’s birth stone- they are quite pretty.
