After a tumultuous week of clashing over the essence of the cosmos, the International Astronomical Union stripped Pluto of the planetary status it has held since its discovery in 1930. The new definition of what is — and isn’t — a planet fills a centuries-old black hole for scientists who have labored since Copernicus without one.
You know this news story reminds of a debate we once had in Grade 5. This memory has long stood with me and I wonder if is why I chose to homeschool. We were learning the art of “debate” and the teacher asked us to provide different topics to try an debate.
Kids were putting up there hand and making suggestions like “is TV bad for you?” . I remember putting up my proudly and offering the topic ” Did Christopher Columbus really discover America or did the Vikings?” after reading or seeing something on TV. Well, my cheeks just burned with shames as both kids AND teacher actually laughed st me- in fact I believe he teacher even snickered. I tried to explain my case and the teacher looked at me with disgust- how stupid could I be? You can’t imagine how often I think of that moment. It keeps me in check when I try and teach “absolute” truths.
So poor Pluto suufers the same fate as Christpher Columbus and school text books around the world are now out dated overnight.
