This is an EXCELLENT article and makes for fascinating reading I remember well the breastfeeding advocate that got hoodwinked and then slammed on the show few years ago- that’s when I stopped watching.
The DR. Phil show featuring homeschooling and unschooling will air Nov. 24th, the day after Thanksgiving.
Its a long article but well worth the read :
The Great School Debate
The Dr. Phil Show, “The Great School Debate” (Proposed Air Date: October 27, 2006) begins with a couple that calls themselves “Radical Unschoolers.”
During a recent discussion on the California Homeschool Network E-mail list, Kirsten shared her first-hand experience as an invited guest on the Dr. Phil show for an upcoming episode about the controversial subject of Unschooling.
First of all, I was present during the taping of the program, which is scheduled to air later this month. Additionally, I’d like to provide a little background history into the Dr. Phil Show.

Wow. you can buy pretty much anything on ebay- they prohibit ‘illegal, dangerous, offensive, or potentially infringing” items and now textbooks!
Ebay policy on homeschool textbooks
Its a bit weird if you ask me- their reasoning is to prevent answer keys from being spread- but really is that their function? People should be free to buy and sell whatever they want ( as long as it is legal) you can buy used panties on ebay but not a 2nd Grade textbook? Even homeschool curriculum textbooks for “teachers” are banned. It is ludicrous.
Below is statement from ebay:
“As you may know, eBay does not permit items that are illegal, dangerous, offensive, or potentially infringing. Additionally, eBay has just recently made the decision to prohibit the sale of Teacher’s Editions of textbooks and solutions manuals that are intended solely for use by teachers. Since eBay strives to be a level-playing field, all Teacher’s Edition textbooks, manuals and guides will be covered under this policy. Unfortunately, home schooling Teacher’s Editions are not exempt from this policy and this policy will apply to all grade levels.”

It’s a Monday afternoon in Mar Vista, Calif., and while other 9-year-olds might be fidgeting at their desks, Isobel Dowdee has played all morning and is now joining her mother and two sisters on a big blanket in their front yard.
Mom, Heather Cushman-Dowdee, keeps the younger girls, Fiona, 5, and Gwyneth, 2, busy drawing pictures. For Isobel, she’s made a large grid with numbers down the side and across the top so her daughter can fill in the multiplication answers. Not that Cushman-Dowdee cares if Isobel does the chart. It’s just that the girl actually wants to do it. Occasionally they play math games or sing counting songs.
