Marketing scheme or not- Dove’s real beauty campaign has been opening eyes to the realities of the beauty business.
Words can not express so clearly the manipulation of women and our image of self as much as this short 1 minute video can.
The video takes an pretty girl and using every trick you can think of turns her in to covergirl. You will see right before your eyes how the women you see on magazine covers are made to look so perfectly beautiful.
Wow! Do I ever wish they had this when I first read the play!
Hard to describe- it is an online version that you “read” of Romeo and Juliet. What makes it different is it is loaded with embedded links- so if you don;t understand a word or phrase you can click on it and it will explain, give you history or etymology of words and phrases. It looks like there is also video available on some pages or coming soon. Think of it has having a built in dictionary and more.
This would work wonderfully with a Romeo and Juliet lesson plan if you use them or your children want to delve deeper into Shakespeare’s plays. Also great tool for self-learners who are just discovering joys of Shakespeare.
‘Speare is a fast-paced, highly addictive space shooter game that teaches literacy skills in a beautifully designed graphic environment. You can download trial version here
Although I have a real problem with the way the game is being marketed ( positioning itself a a TRUE learning game, trick your kids into “learning” something, video games in general have no value or no opportunity for learning, blah, blah, blah) I like the concept of the game itsself.
From the website:
‘Speare fuses fast-paced online arcade game action with the curricular goals of literacy promotion using Shakespeare’s tragedy Romeo and Juliet.
In the style of classic arcade games, ‘Speare launches the player into outer space on a mission to reclaim stolen knowledge (story traces) based on Shakespeare’s plays. By collecting words, phrases, and facts through game play, ‘Speare challenges its players to use information to become successful knowledge gatherers. Only through knowledge gathering can a player successfully complete the game.
One of the unique gaming features of ‘Speare is that it reads Romeo and Juliet as a play about the failure of a community of people to communicate with each other to resolve their conflicts non-violently. The game builds on this lesson and reinforces the value of creative communication and literacy instead of violence and destruction. Read the rest of this entry »
Never heard of this before- but really VERY cool!
This is a picture of a “fire rainbow” / It is the rarest of all atmospheric phenomena. For it to happen- The clouds must be cirrus clouds, be at least 20 thousand km in the air, ice crystal must be present- and here is the kicker- the sun must hit at a 58 degree angle.
