We had quite a night last night. In the last few months we have noticed my now 4 year old son has allergies to cats. The first time something happened was last April when we were at my dad’s house- they have a HUGE fluffy gray cat and after an hour of being their his eyes were swollen shut and his face was blotchy. We were pretty surprised as we have a cat ourselves- I have had him for 12 years. I rushed to drug store and gave him some Benadryl- and it was cleared up pretty much by the time we got home.
IA couple of months ago he was playing with our cat – rubbing his face in his fur and rolling around- and the same thing happened again. I was a but more alarmed as this was our cat and wasn’t sure how to handle it long term. A couple of weeks later I was a friends house – she just acquired some kittens. Another friend was there who is a doctor. My son’s allergies flared up a bit- watery eyes and a few blotched- she examined him and said basically he is allergic. She mentioned that we could just give him Aerius on an ongoing basis and talked about some other things as well- she did say ideally to think about find cat another home.
Sunday we went to my dad’s again- and my son had a more violent reaction- he began wheezing and coughing. More benadryl stopped it but I noticed later he had a bit of a cough. Next day seemed like he had a cold- runny nose, coughing, etc I thought maybe it was residual from cat the night before… gave him some Aerius.. then cough didn’t really get any better. So Tuesday and Wednesday the same but at night his cough seem pretty bad. Then yesterday he seemed bit better. Later in the day his cough started up again. I thought he must have some kind of cold and allergy was a co-incidence. The at supper he had a terrible wheezing and trouble catching his breath… and it kept getting worse.
We took him to emergency and they saw us straight away. He had 2 nebulizer treatments , chest x-rays, etc. They told us to find our cat another home- now. That the respiratory issues were serious. They could hear asthmatic wheezing in his lungs and well the the “stryder” type breathing ( sounds like a harmonica in his throat) That he has problem had signs of asthma for a while and the allergies are making it worse.
We left a 2am – armed with air-flow chamber, 2 puffers and prednisone. I am still in a bit of shock. We see a pediatric asthma and allergy specilist on Monday.
In the mean time we are not sure what to do about cat. I am going to try and find him a home. Another nurse suggested that if treatments were working to wait a few days. Both my kids will be heart broken.
I am also scared for my son that this could happen again and be worse- the attack came on so fast. My son was nursing up until about 3 months ago- and I wonder if when he stopped that changed his ability to resist the allergies, etc.
At any rate- any thoughts or advice would be much appreciated.
