  • Another good “Life With The Plague” book: Year of Wonders

    By Lisa - Unschooling Mom

    Year of Wonders
I am fascinated with all things to do with the plague. I love anything to do with medieval times and interested in “daily life: in specific cultures, for example in Ancient Rome . The dry history holds no interest for me but stories waved with historical facts and being able to get a glimpse of daily life has always caught my attention.

Perhaps this is one reason why I have found unschooling so appealing. I find it easy and more engaging to read facts and history and learn about them with lots of colour- using people, places and events to make the come to life.

I sI started reading the Diane Gabaldon series Outlander in the Winter and love it.. Maybe a BIT on romantic side but enough history in it to make me come back for more.

I read a book a while on my true love- The Bubonic Plague , called Doomsday Book a quasi science fiction book about a woman who goes back in time just as the plague hits a village. I was talking with a small book store owner a couple of weeks ago and she recommenced a book I might like by author
Geraldine Brooks called Year of Wonders . Her most recent novel People of the Bookis a best seller coming on the heels of Pulitzer Prize winning March.

People of the bool will be next on my list of must reads- it is tauted a thinking man’s The Da Vinci Code

Year of wonders is another book about living with the plague and beautifully written. It follow a year in the life of a tiny village an dhow the sickness and death affects everyone. I cannot over estimate how good this book is.
I was so-so on Doomsday Book because the writing seems a bit heavy and forced but this book is just wonderful- it is THAT good. One of the best books I have read in a long. long time.
