W magazine has confirmed it will feature pictures if Angelina Jolie nursing her babies in its November issue. The pictures are candid shots taken by her husband brad Pitt are rumoured to be very tasteful and beautiful.
Do you think this is something that help activist movement? Does it sexualize breastfeeding and nursing? Ii it a matter of a celebrity trying to promote breastfeeding or grabbing for publicity? Does it matter?
As a woman and mother I really don’t think there are too many things more beautiful than a woman nursing a her child . Reading on blogoshpere however I think I am outnumbered.
As a breastfeeding advocate I am probably excited by the pictures of Angelina breastfeeding for different reasons than at least half of the population and I wish we could not contently link BREASTS with SEX. The is a difference between sexuality and sensuality. I suspect most people who will be Google-ing Angelina Jolie Breastfeeding won’t be women looking for support nursing.
However ANYTHING that promotes breastfeeding as normal and natural and beautiful should be applauded. I think she is being brave but putting herself out there and I HOPE she is doing to promote breastfeeding and not as a publicity for her new movie, The Changling.
When I as nursing I did it whenever and wherever- I was “obnoxious” or made it a political statement. I was discrete and natural . I have a friend you would open up her button down shirt all the way and tandem nurse and sort of made it a “activism” like event and it really wasn’t my thing. I don’t think we have to go that far. I think encouraging and supporting women who breastfeed is the way to go. NORMALIZINg is the key. Not making a huge deal of it and making it as common pace as a sippy cup or bottle. I think our generations are more more accepting of breastfeeding. I find the only people ( here in Canada anyway) who seem put off by a breastfeeding mom are older generation. Anyone who ever expressed discomfort about my nursing or anyone else breastfeeding in public seemed to be over the age of 60 OR from a different culture. I lived in Asia for a while and nursing was not at all common.
Will Angelina and Brad Pitt Homeschool Their Kids?
I have grown to respect Angelina Jolie more and more over the past few months. I have been reading about her style of parenting in magazines and tabloids and it seems like she is an unschooler at heart!
One article I read said that she as thinking of homeschooling and I thought WOW. I have been trying to think of other celebrities that homeschool and stumped. I couldn’t imagine what press would do if celebrities like Brad Pitt and Angelina decide to home school or even unschool would do! What a different face it would put on us homeschooling! For the most part mainstream press sees us a bizarre shut ins or fanatic born again Christians- rarely 0 in fact never do i see unschoolers portrayed as free thinking and open minded people.
was thinking about kind of questions Angelina might ask on and unschool email list, say fro example is she subscribed to Sandra Dodd’s radical unschooling list:
” Does anyone know if Armani makes a sling?” ” Should I discipline Shiloh for giving annoying paparazzi the finger? “, ” How do I explain the Billy Bob Thorton years?? ”
Okay, I am being a bit silly., however- how great would it be if a MAJOR celebrity like Angelina Jolie started promoting breastfeeding and homeschooling? I wonder if press would turn on her and start pointing out all the differences of her kids? Would we see headlines like ” Maddox still not reading at 9!”
I remember when Lindsay Wagner ( Bionic Woman) breastfed he son until he was 4 year old and people labelled her as a freak and sick. I think back now about how right she was and the strength and conviction it must have taken to pursue her behalf under such horrible scrutiny.
I remember when Jerry Hall ( Mick Jagger’s wife at the time) came out with pics of her nursing her toddler son and what a impact they made. they were really beautiful and I know on all my lists we were so thrilled that some one so glamorous and in the spotlight took a bit of risk by coming out as an advocate of extended breastfeeding.
