I was watching the last presidential debate between Barack Obama and John McCain. I cringed when Obama started talking about obese children and how parents needed to turn of the TV and put away the Video games.
So kids sitting a chair looking at a blackboard in a failing educational system is not the problem, Shitty food being shoveled into people mouths is not the problem. An pathetic health care system is not the problem. Video games and TV are not the reason children in the United Sates are obese. It’s the lack of food. Yes the LACK of food.
You can by plastic food very cheaply. Foods filled with corn syrup, white flour and sugar are cheap and readily bought. Upper middle class families in big cites can find and afford to buy a good selection of fresh fruits and vegetables. Forget about middle America.
I started thinking more and more about the food people eat in the States when we stared spending our Winters in Florida. We drove throughout Tennessee and southern states. We ate in restaurants and ought groceries in local markets. I was appalled at the lack of choice and the garbage that is passed off as food.
Produce section have a measly selection of fresh fruits and vegetables yest aisles and aisles of trans fat laden mutation of starch and sugar for next to nothing.
I would see people walking around the aisles in motorized wheelchairs stacking up on pop tarts and Little Debbie. Many had an oxygen tank.
I was really shocked at the obesity. I do not blame it on will power or laziness. How can you move when you have no fuel? How can you buy fresh fruit or vegetables when the stores don’t carry them and if they do the prices are insane. Imagine the stupidity that I could not find a Florida orange inf Florida. I paid 1.50 each in grocery store for oranges brought in from California.
You have struggling to do the best for their family, pair unfair wages, give them no health and no where to buy decent food and shove kids in daycare/school/holding pens where very little learning takes place, fatten them up like cattle and teach them to accept and even enjoy crap food.
Frankly- I suspect more learning takes place in front of a video console than an average American class room.
It is not video games or tv. It is a corrupt system, there are thousands of acres of corn fields and giant food companies who need to make food as cheaply as possible to as many people as possible.
Inject food with trans fat and corn syrup call it “cereal” or “juice” . Make people feel full with cakes, cookies, candy and pasta and tell them they are fat from video games. Or better yet sell them a diet pill.
Blame parents and video games and not the food industry or education system that does let kids MOVE anymore.
