I breastfed both my kids until they were just under 4 years old. I can understand how *some* may find the odd. In my circles it would be MUCH more unusual to pull out a bottle for a 1 year then to breastfeed a toddler. My standards of what is “normal” have changed greatly over the last ten years and I try not to judge anyone on their choices.
My son was born prematurely and was in the NICU for 2 weeks. One of the MOST common questions you are asked by staff, interns, nurses etc was if you had breastfed before- they are anxious about it because if you have nursed before and for a long time your milk usually come in more quickly and for some babies that can mean ALL the difference. Many times they would be shocked when I told them I had nursed my daughter until she was 4. They would sort of look a bit surprised… I wouldl smile at them and jokingly ask- “what- you think that I weaned her to soon? ” I smile to myself now when I think of the look on their faces
There would have been a time I would have been offended at the video below- but I see the silly humour of it and it is poking fun at us serious Le Leche League types
What an IDIOT!! not sure how I missed all this . I actually don’ mind the guy, Though I also prefer Jon Stewart. He was commenting on the recent Applebee’s Nursing In.
Here is just one of the dumber comments he made:
” The need to breastfeed in public and not cover up was essentially just women being too lazy to plan ahead. “
Then he went on to say that this was a case of showing off, that moms just want the oohs and Haas of other people because they made a baby–”something a dog can do.”
Oh brother… and people wonder why there is even a NEED for lactivism.
What is disturbing is that I here this kind of so-called humour from other comics- admitedly from other hacks like Joan Rivers. When did it become funny to poke fun at breastfeeding moms? Do we hate women this much? Do we hate children this much?
My son was diagnosed with asthma and cat allergy last month. It wasn;t picked up because my own allergy to cats gave him ant-bodies. He need to be hospitalized the WEEK after he was weaned. I was able to protect him for 4 years.
Who knows what would have happened if I habdt struggled to pump milk and have him fed by tube in NICU. He was premature. He also nursed for almost 4 years. Ew gross? Gross would be my son on nebulizers, steroids and maybe DEAD because he couldn’t breathe. My breast milk in all senses of the word kept him alive.
I can’t go on about this- I am too angry, I will have to finish this post tomorrow.
I am a confident, swimming upstream kind of women who laughs at adversity and the first to stand up to a crowd and can take the heat.
What chance does a new mom struggling with a mother-in-law or mastatitis or postpartum a shitty doctor or unsupportive partner have when she faces humiliation and disdain by jerks like this?
The normally irrepressible and irreverent breastfeeding advocate had been strangely quiet the last few days ( weeks?). We miss the controversy that is her life.
Jenn posted this on her website, The Lactivist Breastfeeding Blog today-
Sorry folks. I’ve had some emails from people telling me I need to at least post an “I’m Alive” post on here.
I am. So are the kids and Greg and everyone else in the family.
Just have some private things going on making it difficult to post. I’ll be back soon, I promise.
Lactating moms around the world breathe a collective sigh of relief and await hearing about her latest mammary adventures.
National Pork Board threatens lawsuit against Jennifer Laycock aka The Lactivist.
Jennifer is a huge proponent of milk banks and supporting mothers who chose to breastfeed. She raises money for he local Ohio milk bank by selling T-shirts that support milk banks and breastfeeding on cafe press . Slogans on her shirts are quite irreverent and very witty. The objectionable Tee? A plain T-shirt that simply says “The Other White Milk” as of this writing Cafe Press yanked the T-shirt off their site. Jennifer points out that she has made 8.00 in TOTAL for the t-shirt, and she is not so much angry about their objection to her using the slogan- but in their lawsuit demand her effort to support breastfeeding- and has another agenda.
Yet another article on why breastfeeding is good. Feel like I am preaching to the choir here but worth a post
Babies who are breastfed for longer than six months are generally happier in later life, a new study has found.
In the latest evidence that ‘breast is best’, researchers tracked 2,500 children in Western Australia over a 16-year period, and found that those who had been breastfed as babies had better mental health as they grew older.
