Teaching Teens to Read ACADEMICALLY- Active Reading

This is part of a series being written on mothercroneshomeschool.blogspot.com .
The information packed post will be of particular interest to teen who have been unschooled and are entering University or college.
Excerpt

This week we have begun a series of lessons on reading academically. A few years back, I read a wonderful book by Mortimer Adler entitled How to Read A Book. I can’t recommend this enough. While my lecture notes will not nearly do it justice, I thought I would share them anyway.

To read post and entire series please visit Mother Crone’s Homeschool

I have had a couple of people ask when winners will be announced- I need offical logo by mid-Decenber so winners will be announced before then.
I am trying to work our some glitches in the poll plug-in I am using- and want that to be working smoothly so I can have readers vote on their favorite design.

Using Your Computer Remotely

We travel a lot. I also am a “work at home mom” I work about 5-10 hours a week. I use some pretty obscure software that I need to get my work done and most people don’t have what I need installed on their PC. I have been able to have impromptu sleepovers at in laws because I can access files on my PC at home through their internet connection.

I am often at library, homeschooling drop-ins and events. Many times I have had a quasi-emergency and had to get a my computer-fast.

Most people don’t really understand what remote access is. They seem to have it confused with ftp or other file transferring type applications. Its not! When you sign up for a remote access service- it is like having your ACTUAL computer or laptop in front of you. You can run programs, access files and play games that are installed on your own PC or laptop- as long as you have internet access and you remote access software installed and activated.

How does it work? You most need to install the software provided by the remote access provider, like Pcremote.com on the computer you want to access from anywhere. Fees usually start around 4.95 a month and most services will have a free trial period.

In fact feel- free to send you Lego creations and I will post here. I may be offering a contest for Lego “re-creations” in the next couple of weeks.
