“I’m Too Pretty for Math” The Dumbing Down of Girls- I Blame Paris Hilton

Okay.. its not totally Paris’ fault.. she is a victim of her own press – and our willingness to gobble it up. When did it become cool to be dumb? Now only is it okay but being dumb and ignorant has become glorified!
I was at IKEA last week ( I HATE that store… but needed to return something…) and while at the check-out I saw a girl that from behind looked like my 10 year old daughter, they were both wearing brown T-shirts. When she turned round i saw she may have been a bit younger and as wearing this AWFUL T-shirt. It said “Too Pretty For Math” WTF???
Her mom was standing beside her. I was aghast. Am I some kind of prude or just not hip? Why would some one with healthy self esteem wear this shirt? Am I missing something?
I would never out right BAN my kids from wearing something like that- but I just don’t see them wanting to wear it.
I am not a RADICAL feminist ( though some may disagree depending on where you are coming from… ) but I was just disgusted by this shirt. Too pretty for math? Too pretty to work? Too pretty to think? What does that mean? I am pretty so I don;t have to know anything… a man ( or woman) will take care of me and do everything? People will like me JUST because I am pretty?
why would a girl think that?
Oh, I know- look at the cover of any Us magazine,, People magazine, Teen magazine, Tabloid or gossip website and the face of Paris Hilton, Nicole Ritchie and Kim Kardashian are plastered all over them. We are a society that worships the young and frivolous and seemingly vacant.. There popularity and fame is why our daughters think- or good god- ASPIRE- to being “Too Pretty for Math”
Can we set the bar any lower?
Who is to blame? All of us. Me for gobbling up Perez Hilton, for picking up a National Enquirer at the Supermarket while my daughter looks on.. For going to YouTube and watching Britney Spears mes up at the MTV awards… For the almost 18 MILLION people who watched Miss Teen USA on YouTube flounder answering a basic questions ABOUT the ignorance of Americans (ironic, isn’t it?).
Am I way off here? Am I some old fuddy duddy that is missing the joke? I don’t see what’s so funny…
